Old and new activities

We had a wonderful day at our super saturday last month.  We had a great turn out and everyone made some darling crafts.

We are grateful for the ladies who came and did classes and demonstrations for us.

Charity Tingey gave us a great discussion on fitness and nutrition.  We learned a lot.

We had a hair demonstration by Beth Wright.  She showed us some darling hairstyles on her daughter Savannah and on Vicki Crosland's granddaughter.

Ann Nielsen led us in a wonderful discussion during lunch about family traditions.  We had a great time sharing traditions we do and learning from others and hearing their ideas.  Ann also shared a tradition they make on Christmas morning that were yummy pancake balls.  They were delicious.

Our last demonstration was learning to make some yummy food by Amalia Barajas with help from Kathy Stringham.  It was delicious and we learned a lot.

We really had a wonderful time and it was so nice to spend the day socializing and getting some crafts done.  Everyone brought some delicious desserts to share and we had soup made by the RS presidency and members of the board.

Our ward Christmas party will be held on Wednesday December 5 at 6:00 at the high school cafeteria.  We will be having soup.  It is always a fun time and we would love to see everyone there.

A look to the future on Tuesday January 8th we will be having a combined RS activity with the 1st ward.  This will be a really special evening.  It will be called 100 dresses after the children's book "The 100 dresses."  We will have a goal to collect as many dresses as we can (hopefully 100) to give to those who do not have dresses.  Prepare to come for a very special night, socialize with the ladies from our ward and the 1st ward and if you can donate a dress or skirt (adult, youth or child) it would be appreciated.  This will be a spiritual night, a night of learning and a night of service by helping out those in need who might not have a dress and cannot go to church.  It will also be a great night to get to socialize with each other.  We will have a dessert served and babysitting provided.  We really want this night to be special and hope to see everyone there.

Morman Tabernacle Choir Christmas Concert

Tickets are being requested for the Morman Tabernacle Christmas Choir right now (I was informed). I cannot go but my sister made me request tickets and if I get them (she informed me I had good luck or something) I had to give them to her. They are a random selection. You put your email info in and if you get selected you get up to four tickets. This year Alfie Boe (who sang on the Les Miserable 25th PBS production) and Tim Brokaw will be there. You can request tickets now up until Oct 22. The concert will be held on Thursday Dec 13, Friday 14 and Sat Dec 15 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday the 16 at 9:30 a.m. You put in your preference but get what you get up to four tickets. The link to register is http://www.lds.org/church/events/temple-square-events/2012-choir-christmas-concert?lang=eng I saw the First Presidency Christmas Devotional but it is already sold out. Hope this is helpful to all if you are wanting to go. You can always request the tickets and if you get them and can't go I'm sure find someone who wants to go. See if you are really lucky :)

Recipes for Saturday

If you are bringing a dessert for our Super Saturday lunch make sure to bring the recipe with it. We would love to add it to our RS recipe book. We will be talking about family traditions during lunch so a dessert that is a family tradition (during holidays or family parties) would be a fun one to bring--but not manditory. And if you can't bring a dessert still come too!!  Remember lunch will be served from 11 to 1 (and no I did not make the pie pictured above but it did come from a friend of mine who has her own cooking show on the cooking channel).

Hair Bows

Just a quick FYI...we originally said you could come any time and make free hair bows but we are going to be doing this as a class and combining it with the hair demonstration at 1:00.  If you are there for the class at 1:00 you can make a couple of free hair bows and learn a few fun hair styles for your daughter or granddaughter.

Also reminder we are doing lunch from 11:00 to 1:00.  The board will be providing soup and rolls.  During lunch we will be doing a family tradition class (while we eat).  If you want to bring a dessert of some sort that is a family tradition (at any holiday or family party) that would be great.  If not don't sweat it and just come.

We will have a nursery available this day too.  We really hope to see you there whether you signed up for a craft or not.  It will be a fun day to come and socialize, mingle and have a fun day.  Remember it is this Saturday...13th 9:00 to 4:00.

Super Saturday Crafts

Super Saturday is on October 13th from 9:00 to 3:00.

We will be having fun crafts, demonstrations, classes, food and socializing with a nursery provided.

You can sign up for these crafts on Sunday at church on Aug 26, Sep 2 or Sep 9 or you can look at them here and email Melanie with what you want to do (or leave a comment on this blog).

All the money for the crafts have to be turned in by September 11th to Melanie Spendlove (with checks made payable to Melanie).

***The first craft is a PVC chair.  This is a fun chair that would be a great gift for a child or grandchild. They come apart and store easily.  The price for this chair is $4.00 which is for the PVC only.  You will need to provide your own material.  It will be best if it is a heavy material such as denim, corduroy or upholstery fabric.  The measurements 45 wide by 32 inches long will make 2 chairs (roughly one yard of fabric).  Bring whatever coordinating color thread to match your fabric.

If you have a hard time getting your fabric just contact Melanie and we can work something out.

**The second craft we will be doing is a fun halloween 2x4 craft.  These are really fun.  The best thing about this craft is that these are on dowel's so you can interchange them with other 2x4's for other holidays.  I plan on making different 2x4's for Christmas (such as a snowman and santa) and a set for Valentine's day that say LOVE.  This craft can be set out and used year round.

The cost of this craft is $6.00 and includes everything shown.

***The next craft is a very fun craft that my kids have gone crazy for.  They are dart guns (or marshmallow guns) made out of PVC pipe.  This is a very fun craft that would be a fun gift for a child, grandchild or a fun gift for your child to give to his friends (I'm thinking Christmas gifts here).  My kids and husband have been going to town with these since we made them.  We will have an assortment of tape and they can be made in all different colors and patterns.

You can purchse just the dart guns (decorated) for $2.00.  Or you can also get them with darts for 0.20 cents a piece.  (Like shown in the picture).  Just let me know how many darts you want to purchase and we will add them on.  Dart wars here we come...This is a fun gift because my 4 year old daughter loves it but my sister said her young men/young woman did this as an activity and LOVED it so it is fun for up to teenagers (my husband has been loving them to).  Fun for all ages.

***The next craft we have are hair bows.  These are made out of different kinds of fabric.  We will have a bunch of different fabrics available so if you want to make different kinds you can have more than one kind of color fabric available.  They are very easy and fun and quick to make.  (If I can make them anyone can make them).  The sample shows a snap clip on the back but I think they will work better with alligator clips so I will be using those instead.  Makes a great gift for a daughter or for anyone you know who has girls.  Also is fun to clip on to hair bands, purses, shirts or anything.

The cost of these bows will be $1.25 per bow.

**The next craft are tile coasters.  These are super fun and super easy to make.  They come in sets of four coasters.  We will have a bunch of different paper to choose from so if you want to make different kinds it will be available.  If you have paper at home you really like you can bring it and make a set from your own paper (or could possibly use pictures if you print them off on cardstock paper).

These would make darling gifts for someone at Christmastime.  Great for visiting teaching gifts, sisters, mothers, grandmothers, neighbor gifts...possibilities are endless.

The cost of this craft is only $1.50 for a set of four coasters.

***The next craft are picture blocks.  These are so darling.  I made three different blocks.  A pink CTR block for a girl, a blue CTR block for a boy, and a temple block.  These would make wonderful gifts for someone or would look great in a girl's room, boy's room or a teen's room.

There are other pictures available so if you have another in mind or don't like the one's offered just come talk to Melanie and we can work something out.

The price for this craft is only $1.25 per block.

**The next craft is a framed priesthood line of authority.  This would be an awesome gift to give to a priesthood holder in your life.  It lists the name of someone in your life with the priesthood and their whole line of authority in front of a beautiful priesthood picture.

You can order this with the mat and frame for $17.00 or without the frame for $5.00

If you order this we will be contacting you for the names so we can get the line of authority to have printed out.

***The next craft is a navity block.  I LOVE this craft.  This nativity is so much fun.  How many nativities do we have but do we have to keep out of the hands of our children.  They cannot get up and personal with the nativity or get to know them.  This is one that the kids can handle and cannot break and looks beautiful at the same time.

The cost for this craft is $6.00

**The last craft we have are ceramic Christ statues.  We are offering all five statues seen but many of them are offered in different sizes and different glazes.  These are a must have for every home.

The cost for this craft depends on which statue you get, which size and which glaze you get.

I am always with thee (the largest one pictured) is $21 for white and pearl and $26 for a royal danish or clear glaze

The Christ with children is $10 for white and pearl and $12 for royal danish and clear glaze if you get a small and $15 for white and pearl and $18 for royal danish and clear glaze if you get a large

The Christ with rock is $10 for white and pearl and $12 for royal danish and clear glaze if you get a small and $15 for white and pearl and $18 for royal danish and clear glaze if you get a large

The Christus is $12 for white and pearl and $14 for royal danish and clear glaze if you get a small, $15 for white and pearl and $18 for royal danish and clear glaze if you get a medium and $24 for white and pearl and $29 for royal danish and clear glaze if you get a large.

Once again we hope to see everyone there at super saturday.  We have a good variety of crafts and have a lot of stuff that makes a good gift to give (or good to have for yourself).  Sign up at church, email me or leave a comment.  Email or call me for any questions you have about any of the crafts.

General Conference Activities

General Conference is right around the corner.  This is an amazing opportunity for each of us to receive some personal spiritual guidance in our lives.  There are many ideas out there that we can use for general conference to be a teaching aid to our children.  We are counseled to have our children watch general conference with us too.  There are many activities we can do with our children and grandchildren to keep them engaged during conference.  Here are a few suggestions:

1.  GENERAL CONFERENCE BINGO---Make bingo cards with pictures of the apostles.  When that apostle comes to the pulpit, they get to mark it off their card.  You could also do this with certain words.  When a certain word is said (such as testimony, faith, baptism, etc.) you get to mark it off your card.

2.  KNOW THAT VOICE—Make a CD of the prophet and apostles voices from their General Conference talks at www.lds.org.  Play only a few seconds of each one and have everyone in the family write down who they think is speaking.  The player with the most correct answers wins a prize!

3.  PROPHET AND APOSTLES FRUIT BASKET—Sit in a circle with one person standing in the middle with a rolled-up newspaper.  Everyone chooses a name of an apostle.  Start by calling out one of the apostles’ names that a player has chosen.  The person in the middle tries to “bump” that player’s head before s/he can call out someone else’s name.  If s/he calls a name that has not been chosen, s/he is automatically in the middle.

4.  COLOR THAT TIE---Find a printable online (sugardoodle.net is a good place to look) of the apostles. Every time a new apostle gets up to speak have the children pay attention to what color of tie he is wearing and color it in on the paper you have printed out.  They will be excited to see who is coming up and be more alert to who the apostle is and what they look like.

5.  CONFERENCE TREAT BUCKETS---Find a container that would work to put your kid's favorite treat in (such as M&Ms).  Write words that will most likely be said over and over again throughout conference such as temple, family, scripture, prayer, etc.  Every time they hear the word they get to go and get a treat out of the bucket.

6.  WHO’S WHO—Lay the pictures of the prophet and apostles on the floor with their names covered up.  Read each name and have a family member find the picture.  This can be a fun timed game in which the person with the fastest time gets a prize.

7.  PROPHET SENIORITY—Lay the pictures of the prophets and apostles on the floor scrambled up.  Have a family member put the pictures in order of seniority.  This can be a fun timed game.

8.  GENERAL CONFERENCE JENGA---Make a list of certain words that you feel will be said (for example temple, testimony, church, missionary, prophet, etc.)  When a word is said you take turns taking a block out of the Jenga pile in order until the pile falls over.  When it falls over set it back up and start over again.

9.  Write down what topics you think will be talked about during general conference and whoever has the most right topics gets a treat.

10.  TREASURE HUNT---Ask a question about a general authority at each stop.  If they get the right answer, you read them the next clue.  Make sure to have a treat at the end!

11.  If one of the general authorities is shown on T.V. and one of the kids knows his name, s/he gets a treat (during conference).

12.  If kids can tell you what the speaker talked about after s/he talked, the child gets a treat (during conference).
13.  GENERAL CONFERENCE BAGGIES---Have a special treat or activity in a baggy that kids get to open when that apostle gets up to speak.

14.  If a child takes notes on a speaker, s/he gets a treat (during conference).

15.  Read Mosiah 2:5-9 and talk about it.  Set up a tent in your T.V. room during conference like they did in King Benjamin’s time.

16.  CONFERENCE PENNIES---Have children listen to conference carefully.  Have specific words be worth a certain amount of pennies (could also use tickets).  Every time they hear the word said they get that many pennies or tickets.  At the end of conference they can use their pennies to go to the "conference store" to get some fun prizes.  The more they listened to conference and the more pennies they earned, the more fun things they can get.  Could buy fun dollar store prizes making them worth different amounts.

AFTER CONFERENCE: During conference, mom keeps good notes on the speakers’ messages. The Monday after conference, mom writes the topics of the talks on paper and tapes them on the wall. Pass out pictures of the apostles and first presidency to family members. Have each one name the person in their picture and pick the topic that matches their person. Then have them tell what they learned from that talk. You have the opportunity to become a member of an exclusive club called the A.U.C. Challenge family to act upon those things that they learned in conference for the next 6 months. You can even make up business type cards with A.U.C. (see below) for them to put in their wallets, on their mirror, in their locker, etc. to remind them to act upon conference. A.U.C. = Act Upon Conference Buy each family member their own conference issue of the Ensign and use it as your FHE manual for the next 6 months.

“Members of the church are entitled to personal revelation as they listen to and study the
inspired words spoken at general conference” (President Uchtdorf, Liahona, Sept. 2011).

Conference is a wonderful time where we can receive wonderful inspiration in our lives.  We can be good examples to our children and grandchildren by listening and watching conference with them.

If you have any fun traditions that you do with your children or grandchildren for general conference please leave a comment on here and we will be sure to add it to our list!!!

Remember general conference is October 6 and 7 at 10:00 and 2:00 with the priesthood session on the 6th at 6:00.

Being Prepared

We got a lot of wonderful information from Star Cummings at our RS enrichment meeting. She had some great tips on being prepared.

We learned that there are six basics you should stock in your home:  Water, food, first aid supplies, clothing and bedding, tools and emergency supplies and special items.  Keep the items that you would most likely need during an evacuation in an easy to carry container such as a backpack.  The best way to pack your backpack is to keep it small, necessary and manageable and relevant to what your family needs.

We were told of a website to go to to help us take small steps to help us toward being prepared in an emergency.  The website is www.do1thing.com

We were also told to check our 72 hour kits every six months and update them.  Star likes to get her 72 hour kit out at the Saturday session of general conference and make sure everything is up to date.  Make sure the food is not expired or is not about to expire.  If it is about to expire then eat it and replace it.  Do not let it go to waste.  If your kid's clothes are not the right sizes then switch them out.  If your batteries need replacing then do so.  (Also a tip was given not to store the batteries in your flashlight but in a ziplock bag).

She gave us a wonderful tip to make a copy of all your important documents and keep them in a place that you could get to fast in case of an emergency and grab and take with you.

Star gave us a great recipe for Survival Bars that can last wrapped in aluminum foil and in a ziplock bag for a long time.  She likes to keep them in her car in case she would ever to get stranded and she had food to survive on.  Here is the recipe:

Survival Bars
2 cups oats
2 1/2 cups powdered milk
1 cup sugar
3 TB honey
1 3 oz package jello (orange or lemon)
3 TB water

Mix the oats, powdered milk and sugar together in a bowl.  A couple of us used regular oats, a couple used quick oats.  I really don't think it matters which you use--whatever you have on hand is fine.

In medium pan mix water, jello and honey.  Bring to a boil.  This is just the 3 TB water called for not the cup of water you'd usually use when making jello.  We found that a rolling boil was better than just beginning to boil for the mixing step.  The recipe I had specifically called for lemon or orange but we didn't know why that would be so we made some with raspberry and watermelon jello also.  After we tasted them, we figured the lemon or orange were specified due to the high amount of sugar in this recipe.  The loaves made with sweet jello flavors were REALLY sweet when they were done!

Add jello mixture to dry ingredients.  Mix well.  If the dough is too dry, add a small amount of water a teaspoon at a time.  This is where it got a bit tricky. You want this to be dry, but it has to be moist enough to stick together, and this stuff is stiff.  Spoons only work for about 30 seconds.  You'll end up cleaning your hands and smashing it all together manually.

Add the water a little at a time---do NOT get impatient and just add a bunch of water.

You can make 3 smaller loaves instead of one big loaf.  Place on cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.  Cool.  Wrap in aluminum foil to store.

_______________________________________________________________

We learn in D&C 38:30 "If ye are prepared ye shall not fear."  This night really helped us focus on that.  Bishop Nielsen showed up and added that on the top layer of our 72 hour kits we need to have a set of scriptures.

The second part of the night we focused on food storage and knowing when the "Price is Right."  The Relief Society presidency wants us to know that we have been counseled to have a three month supply of food.  They are going to start letting the relief society sisters know when the price is right on certain foods around Fillmore and when is a good time to stock up our food storage on certain items.  Because of this theme we played a few Price is Right games.

We had our own "Barbara Barker" and of course she had her "Barker's Beauties" to help her along.
The first game we played of course is PLINKO.  Barbara called her guests to come on down and if they guessed the food storage or 72 hour kit question right they got to play Plinko.

Depending on where their plinko chip landed they won a prize. This was either an item to go in their food storage (such as a can of tuna fish) or an item to go into their 72 hour kit (such as a flashlight). It was a lot of fun.

The second game we played was to see if we really knew the price of food.  We had 10 or so items that were priced at a local grocery store.  Contestants had to guess what the price of the item was.  The contestant who guessed closest to the cost, won the item.  It was real interesting to see if we knew the cost of the groceries.  Some ladies made out with a lot of groceries that night.

At the end we totaled up all the items and had a showcase winner.....and she won the grand prize....

All the ladies had a wonderful night and we learned a lot.  Hope to see everybody out at the next activity.  Watch for sign ups for Super Saturday!!!

Price is Right--72 hour kits

Mark your calendars for Tuesday August 14 at 6:00 for our next relief society activity.

We will be having Star Cummings come to teach us about 72 hour kits.  With the many fires in our area lately, we have been reminded just how important having an up to date 72 hour kit is.  We can never be too prepared for an emergency.

Also that night we will be kicking off our price is right theme for food storage.  We will be playing some really fun price is right themed games.  It will be a lot of fun and there will prizes you can win.  We will have our own "Barbara Barker."  Come in your own home-made price is right shirts (like on the show) for more fun if you want.  We will have a yummy dessert and nursery provided.  It will be a night you won't want to miss!!!

This is the same night as the middle school back to school night....this is why we changed the time to 6:00.  We want you to still come and we hope to get done in time to have you there by 7:00.  Thanks for your support!!!

(A special thanks to those who made the clothing exchange a success--we will plan on holding it next year and expanding to adult clothing too and other items so hang on to those clothes when going through them with that in mind--it was a lot of fun)

(Also keep those recipes coming in--we want to get this 4th ward cookbook going and you don't want to be left out of it)

Clothing Exchange

On Saturday July 28th from 10 to 12 at the church we will be having a clothing exchange. Drop your gently used children's clothing (ranging in size from infant clothes up to primary age 12) to the church on Friday night between 7 to 7:30 p.m.. We will have tables set up for you to sort out your clothes by size and gender that night. You can bring any sort of clothes, dresses, shoes, coats, Halloween costumes, baby items, etc. You do not need to bring items to come and get items for your kids or grandkids. If you cannot bring your items on Friday night you can drop them off any time beforehand to Melanie Spendlove's house. Then come on Saturday the 28th (any time between those hours)and browse the items others dropped off and find something that is right for you!!! All items that are leftover and are not taken by anyone will be donated to the DI. With school right around the corner we hope you can find some help at our clothing exchange. ***Also be sure to be gathering your recipes for our ward cookbook***

Dipping for Humanitarian

Thanks to everyone who came out and supported our humanitarian project. We got three quilts done and ready to be sent off to the humanitarian center. We had a great turnout and got to sample some amazing dips. We have some wonderful cooks in our ward. It was great to mingle and get to know each other better and eat some good food. We have more quilt tops in the closet that need to be tied. If anyone is interested in tying more quilts, please talk to Cindy Day or Melanie Spendlove. We would LOVE your help.
We hope to see everyone at the next activity on June 19th at the BBQ!!!
